The F.C.A. of Central Arizona is a non-profit organization of area residents dedicated to helping our neighbors make funeral arrangements that are dignified, meaningful and AFFORDABLE!.
They achieve this goal through consumer-education outreach, including group presentations, printed materials, personal consultations, local price surveys and membership benefits. We serve residents in Maricopa and Pinal Counties, plus some outlying areas.
Founded in 1961, the FCA of Central Arizona is one of more than 100 similar groups across the country, supported by the National Funeral Consumer Alliance (www.funerals.org). They are run solely by volunteers, and have no attachment to the funeral industry or any religious group. Our membership is open to all.

Who Contacts Social Security and can receive the death benefit?
We contact Social Security, This is a process that is taken care of during the initial filing of the death certificate. If it is the desire of the surviving spouse to collect the death benefit, they are responsible for submitting the proper "free" death certificate to the local social security office. A death benefit of $255 will then be mailed in aproximatly 14 days. If the spouse is deceased, the benefit then goes to the "minor child" of the deceased. If there is no minor child, no death benefit is paid out by Social Security. Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 for further assistance.
Who fills out and can obtain the death certificate?
The funeral home is responsible for obtaining all the information that goes on the death certificate from you. The funeral home then obtaining the causes of death from the doctor (by law, the doctor has 72 hours to provide causes) ensuring that the causes of death are submited in a timely manner and filing all this information with the office of vital records for death registration. The only person eligible to order death certificates are the spouse, children, parents, sibling, legal guardian or documented legal representative (attorney or executor to the estate) of the deceased. Maricopa County charges $20 each and delivery time can take 7 to 10 days. We can order the certificate for you or you may order it by mail or in person at the office of vital records in Phoenx. NOTE - Power of attorney, be it medical or other, ceases at the time of death.
Who Can Arrange a Funeral Service?
AZ Statute 36-831, Burial duties and responsibilities...
The duty of burying a deceased person of or providing other funeral and final disposition arrangements for a decedent devolves in the following order (this does not include cremation authorization):
1. If the deceased was married, on the surviving spouse unless legally separated or divorced.
2. The person designated as having power of attorney for the decedent in the decedent's most recent durable power of attorney.
3. If the deceased was a minor, on the parents.
4. The adult children of the deceased.
5. The parents of the deceased.
6. The adult siblings of the deceased.
7. The grandchildren of the deceased.
8. A/the grandparent of the deceased.
9. An adult who exhibited special care and concern for the deceased.
10. A person acting as the guardian of the deceased at the time of death.
11. On any other person who has the authority to dispose of the deceased’s body.
12. If none of the above are available or cannot afford, on any person or fraternal, charitable or religious organization willing to assume responsibility.
