Michael Onyango Hanford Ogwel was born on October 14, 1984, in Kisumu, Kenya, to John Ogwel Nyangwatho and the late Mary Akelo Ogwel, who preceded him in death on April 23, 2026. He spent his early years in Kenya before he moved to Seattle with his parents and siblings, Stanislaw, Liza, and Yvonne.
As a young child, Michael was wise, open-minded, and curious about the world around him. He was also kind-hearted and found joy in connecting with others and making friends. It was in Kent, WA, where he attended high school and joined the track and field team—he was a passionate and avid long-distance runner.
Michael was a man whose life remained deeply anchored in the love of his family and the Kenyan heritage he carried. While his strong-willed, "hard-headed," nature was a familiar part of his character, it was the immense love he held for those who knew him that really shined through.
Above all, Michael shared a sacred and unbreakable bond with his mother, Mary. Some of his happiest, most fulfilling moments were spent right by her side—working together, supporting each other, and sharing the quiet rhythms of daily life. He proudly followed in her footsteps, carrying on her legacy as an entrepreneur by operating his own stall at local weekend farmers markets in Phoenix. Their relationship was built on a foundation of unconditional love and mutual respect. Mary’s presence remained Michael's guiding light.
Michael leaves behind his loving father, John Ogwel Nyangwatho; his older brother, Stanislaw Ogwel; his older sister, Liza Ogwel; and his younger sister, Yvonne Ogwel. He is also lovingly remembered by his cousins, nieces, nephews, close relatives, and friends in Kenya, the United States, and around the world.
Michael will be remembered for his gentle nature, warm smile, and caring spirit. Although our hearts are filled with sorrow, we are grateful for the years we shared with Michael and the memories that will remain with us forever. His life reminds us of the importance of family, friendship, compassion, and the bonds that sustain us through life's challenges.
