Stephen Hal Butler, a man whose life was a rich mosaic of dedication, warmth, and spirited passions, passed away peacefully at his home in Buckeye, Arizona, on May 23, 2026. Born on July 1, 1939, in St. Johns, Arizona, Stephen's journey through life was marked by service, love for family, and an enduring connection to the natural world and the communities he held dear.

A proud graduate of Arizona State University with a degree in Business, Stephen's career spanned two decades as a Right of Way Agent for Salt River Project, where his commitment to his work reflected his steadfast integrity and professionalism. Before his civilian career, he served his country honorably in the United States Navy, where his musical talents blossomed as he played the tuba in the Navy Band, contributing to the morale and spirit of his fellow servicemen.

Stephen’s love for animals, particularly horses, was a defining trait; he found solace and joy in their presence throughout his life. His vibrant personality radiated through his colorful interests—favoring the color purple, savoring Mexican cuisine, and reveling in the melodies of big band music alongside the timeless hits of Neil Diamond and Kenny Rogers. Northern Arizona’s outdoors called to him, where he embraced the traditions of hunting and fishing, fostering a deep appreciation for nature’s bounty.

Beyond his personal pursuits, Stephen’s generous spirit extended into his community. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, embodying faith and fellowship. His mentorship as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America left an indelible impact on young lives, while his participation in Toastmasters showcased his commitment to growth and communication.

Throughout his life, Stephen lived across vibrant landscapes—from the sunny climes of San Diego to the serene environs of Oregon and Reno, Nevada, before finding his final home in Arizona. Each place etched memories and friendships that colored his narrative.

Stephen is survived by his beloved wife Patricia Butler; his brother, Tommy Butler; and his sisters, Elta Joyce Laughlin Bentley and Susan Beth McKee. His legacy is carried forward by his six children—Steve Butler, Trisha Dobbs, Stephanie Price, Sheri Harrell, Melanie Dobbs, Kim Slagle, and Scott Dobbs—who conceive of him as a pillar of strength and affection. They are joined by 30 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, each a living testament to Stephen’s enduring influence and love.

He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Hal Butler, and his mother, Billie Lorraine Neville Laughlin, whose memories continue to resonate in the hearts of the family.

A memorial gathering to honor Stephen’s remarkable life will be held on May 31, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 22487 W Sundance Parkway, Buckeye, Arizona.
